Gabrielle Boimann USA, MBA Class of 2022, Portfolio Manager, Rabobank, Netherlands
Why did you choose to study at Hochschule Pforzheim?
There were multiple criteria that influenced my decision to study at Hochschule Pforzheim. The first criteria was an AACSB accreditation, which would show my achievements at HSPF are recognized worldwide. Secondly, I wanted a practical, hands-on approach to learning where I would also gain exposure to industry experts in- and outside the classroom. Finally, I sought a program that emphasized sustainability and corporate social responsibility not just in specific courses, but also integrated these topics through the curriculum. The MBA at HSPF fulfilled these top three criteria perfectly. When it came down to choosing between HSPF and another university, I ultimately chose HSPF because of the longer duration of the program. The longer program not only allowed me to gain foundational knowledge of various business functions in the first semester, but it also allowed for a deeper exploration of relevant topics and coursework in subsequent semesters which are vital to approaching today's business needs.
How has your life changed since finishing the MBA?
Since finishing the MBA, I moved to the Netherlands, started working as an Investor Relations Officer for a publically listed tech firm, and nearly tripled my network. For me, the MBA gave me the hard and soft skills needed to succeed in such an interdisciplinary role whether it is in finance, cross-cultural communication, marketing, or strategy.
What advice would you give to those applying?
The MBA is about what you learn. Go for it and commit to being a lifelong learner. Moving to a new country while also taking on the challenge of a rigorous MBA program is not easy, but it is the best time to try and learn new things even if there are some mistakes along the way.
Tank you, Gabrielle!
Rupert Rivera, USA, MBA Class of 2020 Senior Technology Consultant, EY
What are your main takeaways from the MBA?
There is a lot of variety in the professional working world, might sound corny saying that, but the MBA program really has a lot of different personalities with different areas of specialty & expertise. Regardless of that background, your ambition to pursue any business topic during your studies & after graduation are supported by your professors and wide choice of business electives. The base program is a strong foundation & the electives + company project and ability to work in the 4th semester really give you a great opportunity to focus your career in any direction you choose.
How did the MBA program help you in your professional career?
The interactions with future business leaders from a ton of different cultural backgrounds certainly prepared me to work with international teams at EY. I work with teams across EMEIA & having the empathy and emotional intelligence on top of the hard skills the MBA provides has certainly been an advantage for me. Relevant courses that have really helped me in my current work include: change management, innovation management, information management, design, project management and communications management. I refer back to that knowledge & have really built my career on top of those foundations, making them stronger with each new project and new work experience that I take on.
What do you, in your experience, think is/are the main advantage(s) of HSPF's MBA?
The HSPF MBA is credentialed, affordable and full of world-class professors that have worked in business for many years before coming to HSPF. So emphasizing the University of Applied Sciences (Hochschule) over a regular research university, really means that students get relevant, hands-on case studies based on real world experiences from professors and companies in Europe. Further to that point, you also get to meet those leaders of industry in the region and have the opportunity to work on actual projects that directly impact those companies. This makes transitioning into the German working world significantly easier than other programs. Another advantage for those that want to work in other countries in the future, the lessons you learn here can be applied in any professional services working environment globally, not only in Germany. On top of that, there’s the opportunity to learn with partner universities in several other countries as well. Alumni of our program are working for top companies in countries all over the planet.
What would you advice current students to do/look out for while going through the MBA?
Push yourself out of your comfort zone into the new area of work you envision yourself in. Want to be a better public speaker? take advantage of those opportunities to present case studies and pitches in front of your classmates & experienced professors. Want to get into consulting or finance or marketing? Take electives in those fields and really apply what you learn from them during your projects and internships. The real benefit of the MBA is not getting the best mark, it is about gaining new knowledge, failing fast and truly learning from your 2 years at HSPF. Also, hang out with German students outside of the MBA batch! Those connections and experiences will really give you a taste of the local culture & help you make some lifelong friends while also seeing more the region has to offer like beautiful hikes, streams and villages in the Black Forest that are only 15-30 min away by S-Bahn or bus.
Thanks, Rupert!

What is Mentoring?
Mentoring is a reliable and efficient instrument of guidance and support for our current MBA students and focuses on their learning needs. MBA graduates with at least two years of work experience after their graduation (mentors) pass on their knowledge and experience to current MBA students (mentees). Mentoring stands for an intensive, challenging and mutually rewarding relationship of trust concentrating on the mentee’s development of personal, social and professional competencies. It enables the mentor to gather experience in areas such as consulting, learn about expectations of career starters and widen their network by getting to know other mentors. The mentee benefits from the knowledge and know-how of a professionally experienced MBA graduate and works on his/her own personal and professional development under the guidance of the mentor.
What does the Mentoring Program entail?
The mentoring program aims at bringing together successful MBA graduates with ambitious current MBA students. Elements of the mentoring program include consulting, transfer of knowledge, coaching, insight into daily business routines, support, feedback, networking and many other things that are needed in today´s challenging business world.
Who can be a Mentor?
Our mentors are MBA graduates with at least two years of work experience in a qualified, leading position after they graduated - this can of course also include self-employment. The mentors are willing to invest their time, personality and knowledge in committed students and offer them guidance and advice. Their tasks include sharing knowledge, giving general and career advice and support and opening doors for their individual mentees. The mentors support and guide their mentees by encouraging them, listening to them and asking questions, looking ahead and pointing out possible obstacles and challenges to them.
Who can be a Mentee?
Mentees are current 3rd semester students of our MBA International Management program. Their learning and development process is the focus of the mentoring program. They are obliged to ask their mentor for guidance and counselling and are responsible for their success within the mentoring program. Tasks of the mentee are to reflect on and set their goals, think about potential professional perspectives, stay in touch with their mentor, show initiative and be open for advice.
How does it work?
The mentoring program lasts for twelve months. Meetings take place on a regular basis every 4 to 6 weeks. The way of communication (in person, by phone, E-Mail or Skype) as well as meeting dates, key subjects andmutual expectations are agreed upon beforehand. The MBA team initiates the mentoring program by matching the mentors and mentees according to their profiles and their personalities before it brings the pairings together for the official start of the mentoring program. The kick-off takes place via an information E-Mail send out by the MBA office to the individual mentor-mentee pairings. The mentee is encouraged to keep minutes of the meetings for future reference. At the end of the twelve months the mentoring program will be evaluated by the mentors and mentees in order to guarantee the quality of the program and adjust it where need arises.
Mentee Li Ding, China, Class of 2020
“I really appreciate that the MBA team launched the mentoring program this semester, giving me the opportunity to get to know my mentor James. He is the best match to be my mentor. We have the same professional background so that we have a better understanding for each other. Till now we meet every month personally. The contact per Email or WhatsApp is of course available anytime. James helps me finding my strength and analyzing the potential career path which can match my qualifications and interests. He is very experienced and helpful. I get a lot of insight from him.”
Mentor James Dymond, USA, Class of 2004
Senior Investor Relations Specialist, SAP Germany
“The mentoring program so far has been rewarding from my side. Li and I hit it off right away, and despite the fact our home countries are on opposite sides of the world, we have a lot in common. We have been meeting once a month depending on availability and I have been “assigning homework” in the form of questions to trigger deeper thought and therefore guide our conversations. I am looking forward to continuing to serve as mentor.”
