Dr. Maylett is the CEO of DecisionWise, a company that focuses on managerial leadership. He is also a faculty member at the Marriott School of Business of Brigham Young University, located in Utah, USA and co-author of MAGIC: Five Keys to Unlock the Power of Employee Engagement (2014).

What attracts Dr. Maylett to Pforzheim’s MBA program is the “opportunity to work with some excellent students and excellent faculty… and the international nature of this program.”  He enjoys teaching the Leadership course in Pforzheim because it’s fun and challenging at the same time due to the variety of backgrounds and cultural experiences. While it’s challenging to consider the many cultural dimensions of leadership, Dr. Maylett also believes it’s fun because of the richness the international cohort brings into the course. Furthermore, he said, “I love it, the small-class size.”

Here’s what some students had to comment about the Leadership course. Ujwa, a student from India, stated, “I like the 360° feedback, as it was a new concept to me. It allowed me time for introspection, which made me aware of many things about myself, both good and bad.” Olaitan, a Nigerian student, takes three concepts with him from this course: “1. MAGIC (Meaning, Autonomy, Growth, Impact, Connection) 2. Engagement 3. Different situations need different leadership styles.

Three key takeaways that Dr. Maylett hopes students take with them from his course are:

  1. I can be a leader
  2. I can lead people around me
  3. I can lead organizations or transform large groups of people

His advice to students is: “Don’t try to lead in a way that is not authentic. The best leaders lead with authenticity.” Furthermore, he believes that students have the responsibility to influence the world. Dr. Maylett encourages students to have gratitude; “we should be grateful for the opportunities that we have and take advantage of them.”
