Alumni meet current students

News

It is always a very inspiring experience when MBA alumni visit the campus and share their journey with the current students of the MBA International Management Program.

This time seven alumni visited the Hochschule Pforzheim campus for the “Alumni Meet Current Students” event that is held once per semester. This time Nathaly Sandoval (class of 2018)), Asad Malik (class of 2015), Anh Ngyuen (class of 2014), Avigyan Dutta (class of 2014), Tim Ortmann (class of 2004), Stefan Grün (class of 2014) and Dr. Reha Tözün (class of 2004) shared their experiences with the current MBA students.

TIM ORTMANN, class of 2004, Germany

Germany Managing Partner, Novilio Consulting

Tim told his story about his plans of opening a business just after he graduated in 2004, but he knew that he needed to gain experience first. So for a couple of years he worked in the consulting industry before starting his own consulting firm, Novilio Consulting, in 2014 together with co-partners. Today they aim to help DAX companies as well as federal and regional authorities to improve their business processes. When asked about his time at Pforzheim University, he said that he felt very lucky to study at one of the leading Business Schools in Germany and that the people he met here were the most important thing. “The professors from different business backgrounds brought all their knowledge and experiences to the classroom, so that in the end all the buzzwords made sense”.

ANH NGUYEN, class of 2014, Vietnam

Regional Business Manager, Trivago

From her former work experience and her job as a Regional Business Manager at Trivago Anh Nguyen offered the current MBA students one of her secrets to success: “If you are the smartest person in the room, you are in the wrong room” she said. She also suggested that the students first compete in a conservative management level environment to boost their confidence. These words show how large the need of management skills and leadership qualities for today’s working culture really is. She also said “you have to show up wherever you are. Try more than the rest and let people know that you are there”.

NATHALY SANDOVAL, class of 2018, Ecuador

Senior Procurement Operations Manager, Accenture

Nathaly shared her career path from being an engineer to becoming a consultant for Accenture after graduating from the MBA at Hochschule Pforzheim. Courses like Change Management and the electives in Consulting prepared her for the challenges of her new work environment and the job she has now.  When asked about her new work, she said “I love to be in the consulting sector”. She also gave students an idea about how important the trending topic digital transformation is for her daily work. She recommended the MBA students to “go out of the comfort zone and do something else. If you like what you do, nothing is a problem”. Besides her job as a Senior Procurement Operations Manager she feels very honored to also be a career counselor who gives guidance to new colleagues at Accenture.

ASAD MALIK, class of 2015, Pakistan

Global Marketing Manager, Nexperia

Asad shared his journey from being a general expert for performance analytics to being a global marketing manager for Nexperia, a global leader in small signal discretes, Logic and MOSFETs. His theses, that Asad wrote with one of the big German car producers, allowed him the step into a new field: the automotive industry, “one of the most conservative industries in Germany”, as he said. He asked the MBA students to become real value drivers, no matter in which field of business they might work after their studies. “Be proactive and develop your own ideas. What is the worst that can happen…? If it´s a success you go from there.”

DR.REHA TÖZÜN, class of 2004, Turkey

Business Manager & Senior Consultant, bridgingIT

Coming from a mechanical engineering background with work experience in the automotive industry in Turkey Reha especially appreciated the exchange with his batch mates of the MBA program. “To learn from each other is priceless”, he stated when asked about his experience at Hochschule Pforzheim.  He also stressed how important it is for international students to learn German if they are planning to enter the German job market. After graduating from the MBA Reha did his PhD at Stuttgart University. Besides his job as a business manager & senior consultant at bridgingIT he also works as a lecturer for mobility innovation at Hochschule Esslingen and Pforzheim. Since Reha considers time management being one of the biggest challenges in our times, he suggested the students to “try to keep calm even when you are burning inside.”

AVIGYAN DUTTA, class of 2014, India

Assistant Director, EY

Avigyan, who was holding a Bachelor in Electrical and Electronics Engineering when he started the MBA in Pforzheim, told the current students how important the program was for him to get interviews for a strategy and consulting position after his graduation despite having the required experience at times. He said that “the rich exposure to open debates and presentations in the classroom prepared me for my current job at EY” and “if you don´t develop soft skills, there is no excuse.” Besides this he also stressed how important it is to learn German as soon as possible if someone plans to work in consulting in Germany.

STEFAN GRÜN, class of 2004, Germany

Vice President Compensation & Benefits, HR Services and Workforce Planning, WMF

Stefan shared with the current students that for him, being a German student, the intercultural experience of the MBA on a daily basis was priceless. For Stefan communication management is one of the crucial challenges of today´s business world so the skills he acquired during the program were very helpful. Another advice that he had for the students was to “be curious! Always ask things and bring new ideas to the company you work for.”

After a Q&A session, Professor Harald Strotmann, Vice Dean of Pforzheim Business School and Director of the MBA program, wrapped up with a summary of takeaways of the session. Key messages besides learning German included coming up with new ideas, the importance of networking and adding value to the company you work for. Prof. Strotmann thanked the alumni for their “interesting insights and inspiring” stories. He reiterated the importance to “build your story” and “make yourself visible.” The evening ended with an opportunity to personally approach the alumni and reach out to them with further questions. As always, we value the time and effort that alumni give back to our program and how they support our current students.
