Compulsory study counseling (oSB) for credit backlogs

Have you achieved less credit points than you should have got on your debit side and your StudiCockpit shows that your course of studies is not optimal? If this is the case, please make an appointment with Student Services.

We are happy to assist you in planning your further studies and to advise you on how to successfully finish your studies despite the backlog, what you need to know and take into account when planning your further studies and last but not least: what a studyplan with a feasible workload looks like.

Your personal plan and overview of your current study status is the foundation of the study counseling. If you need assistance in prioritizing what needs to be done next and how to define a course forecast up to graduation, please use our “Studienablaufprognose” (SP) to prepare yourself for the counseling. It is a helpful planning tool which can be downloaded in the e-Campus. If needed, we also provide an instruction on how to complete the SP in German and English.

If you would like to speak to us or make an appointment, please see "Appointment & Contact details".

Familiy-friendly university: Being a mum or dad and study successfully

As a certified family-friendly university, the Pforzheim University provides special support and offers for parental students so they can combine their studies with taking care of their children. For example: You can take up to six intermission semesters, but are still allowed to take part in exams and lectures during this time. You can also reduce your workload per semester, if you wish, whenever necessary.

We are happy to provide support in planning your studies and answer your questions about opportunities and offers for parental students. Our goal is that being a parent doesn’t stand in the way of studying successfully. We can also inform you about counseling services outside the university and share contacts who can support you when dealing with the challenge of studying and taking care of children at the same time. Don’t hesitate to contact us and make an appointment online or by phone (see "Appointment & Contact details").

Also, take a look at the website of the "Familiengerechte Hochschule", where you can find useful information about childcare, the parent-child-room at our university and “Mensa Kids”.

To study with a physical or mental illness

Dealing with a challenging physical or mental condition can be tough. It can affect your studies in a way that you need to adapt your plans and goals, or your illness might affect your ability to study.

We are happy to support you in planning your studies with special regard to your personal situation. Our experience shows that the earlier you contact us and let us know about your condition, the more likely we are able to provide effective and timely support and guide you through your studies.

In case of an acute or worsening condition, you can apply for an intermission semester and take a break to recover and gain new strength. If your condition affects your ability to study for a longer time, as is the case with chronic or mental conditions, we can support you in applying for a compulsory study agreement (“verbindliche Studienvereinbarung”) which results in a reduced workload.

We are happy to discuss all options with regard to planning your studies, support you during applications and, if necessary, inform you about other helpful counseling services outside our university.

How to study under challenging conditions and during a personal crisis

You never know what life has in store for you and what challenges are yet to come.

Some of these challenges may affect your studies. Whether the death of a close relative or beloved friend, the end of a relationship, conflicts with fellow students or other stressful events, which can suddenly occur in your life: You are welcome to contact us, and we will try to provide support in every way we can.

In case you have a very urgent crisis or problem which may affect your studies for a longer period of time, an intermission semester may give you a brake to gather new energy and sort out things. It can also be helpful to ask for further guidance from other counseling services around Pforzheim or Karlsruhe, for example the Psychotherapeutic Counseling Center of the "Studierendenwerk Karlsruhe Pforzheim" (PBS).

In any case, we are very happy to talk to you about your options and support you in planning your further studies, depending on your current situation.

Nursing care leave

If you have to take care of a close relative in your household, you can apply for a nursing care leave. The Q&A (FAQ Prüfungsfragen) of the examination office provides detailed information about the application process, the requirements and further options. You can, for example, apply for an intermission semester under special requirements, which will still allow you to take part in exams and lectures. Or you can reduce your workload, a possibility under the compulsory study agreement.

We are happy to advice and support you in planning your studies and in applying for a compulsory study agreement with regard to your personal situation. Additionally, we can provide further information and share contact details for counseling services beyond the services of our university which can give support in dealing with the challenge of studying and caring for a family member. Don’t hesitate to contact us to make an appointment (see "Appointment and contact details").
